Head of Marketing

Want to do your bit for native reforestation while challenging yourself in an ambitious, climate-tech start-up?

CarbonCrop helps landowners get paid to establish and protect forests, by streamlining access to forest carbon credits and markets. We care about restoring forests for many reasons. Forests reduce soil erosion, improve biodiversity and help address climate change by taking carbon out of the atmosphere. We’re particularly motivated to regenerate indigenous forest where native wildlife flourishes.

While New Zealand carbon credits have existed since 2008, they can be difficult for landowners to access. That's where we come in. We make it easy for landowners to understand their eligibility and start earning carbon credits under New Zealand's Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). While our immediate focus is the New Zealand market, we plan to launch internationally in the near future.

CarbonCrop was born out of the Nelson Artificial Intelligence Institute, an incubator for high-impact sustainability start-ups, and raised $1.5 million in seed funding from WNT Ventures in 2021 and an additional $1.9 million in 2022 ahead of going for Series A. Our innovative software uses satellite imagery, machine learning and artificial intelligence to analyse forests and calculate carbon sequestration.

About you

We are seeking a talented Head of Marketing to help us build our brand as a trusted authority in carbon forestry and drive demand within a fast-evolving landscape. Our target audiences include farmers and foresters, but also environmental restoration charities, agricultural partners and climate-tech influencers. In future we also expect to target companies seeking to reduce and offset their carbon emissions - and ultimately their end-consumers too.

You’ll join a friendly and collaborative team working to deliver new capabilities in the high growth climate-tech space. We’re a young company; we’re all here to work hard and support each other in making a difference, and to have fun doing it. This role is perfect for someone with a growth mindset and a passion for being part of something positive.

This position reports to the Chief of Marketing & CX. Location is flexible within New Zealand; we’re headquartered in Nelson but many of our team work from home.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, execute and continuously refine a full funnel marketing plan including performance marketing, events, PR, email, advertising/media, content marketing, marketing automation and brand partnerships.

  • Ensure budgets, targets and performance are tracked and continuously improved upon, using a data-driven approach.

  • Manage and mentor a small but growing marketing team, including relationships with external partners and freelance talent.

  • Establish and refine processes that can scale, driving best practices within marketing and the broader team.

  • Develop compelling messaging and content, in alignment with the CarbonCrop vision. Bring our proposition to life through creativity and storytelling, writing inspired creative briefs and messaging frameworks.

  • Manage marketing interactions with customers via HubSpot and other platforms, ensuring data is accurate and maintained.

  • Collect, analyse and quantify customer insights and market trends to build successful marketing strategies and campaigns.

  • Apply continuous improvement methodologies to optimise performance.

  • Represent CarbonCrop and its values in public and customer communications, and in industry events.

  • Act as an internal and external brand ambassador, fostering our values and culture.

  • Go outside your role as and when necessary to help the team and product as whole succeed.

Requirements

  • A strategic thinker with a good dose of tactical pragmatism. Ability to balance brand and storytelling with performance marketing and sales activation.

  • Solid experience managing teams, agencies and third-party suppliers.

  • Track record of designing and executing effective marketing campaigns across multiple channels, including but not limited to digital and social media.

  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills, with a keen eye for detail. Ability to understand complex products/markets and simplify messaging for different audiences.

  • Commercial acumen and a genuine growth mindset.

  • Applied knowledge of CRMs/marketing automation platforms and website management.

  • Experience of creative problem-solving in unfamiliar environments. Confidence establishing systems and practices from scratch.

  • Excellent organisational skills - you’ll thrive in a startup environment and be comfortable juggling priorities and responding to change with grace and flexibility.

  • Strong environmental values.  A genuine passion for working on climate change and carbon forestry.

  • Collaborative, hands-on approach, with a readiness to pitch in where needed.

  • Must have the right to live and work in New Zealand.

Bonus points

  • Tech start-up or scale-up experience.

  • A background or expertise in farming, forestry or financial markets.

  • Applied knowledge of carbon markets, sustainability or climate change.

We make it easy and profitable for landowners worldwide to protect and restore forests, by giving them simple access to carbon markets and assuring their projects are of high integrity. The magic is the packaging of machine learning and remote sensing technology into a clean and simple web app that gives anyone a tailored assessment of the carbon forestry potential of their land, and a project execution model that takes away the risk and hassle. The result is stronger farm economics, less carbon in the atmosphere heating up the planet, and improved climate resilience and biodiversity of our landscapes. The company is in a strong position and is growing rapidly - customers love our product and we now have tens of thousands of hectares of farms now under contract and revenue coming in, and have just closed another successful funding round.

We are looking for a friendly, motivated backend/infrastructure engineer who has experience implementing web applications across the entire stack, loves getting their hands dirty with infrastructure and ops, and is excited by the prospect of using cutting edge technologies to help restore our climate and natural environment.

You’ll be working across our application stack, primarily in the backend (with a range of spatial, analytics, and automation pipelines, as well as integrations with our machine learning stack), and integrating with the GIS/Mapping/Analytics centric React client (with both customer facing and internal interfaces). Together with the rest of the engineering, product, and marketing team you’ll work to understand our customers and their requirements, define system architectures and use your experience to deliver creative and innovative solutions to help them make the best use of their land for sequestering carbon, improving biodiversity, and driving climate resilience.

While web application engineering will be at the core of your role, you won’t be afraid to get stuck in and help wherever it’s needed. In particular, we actively work to create opportunities for interested engineers to get involved with machine learning and data science as part of the role. We’re a young company; we’re all here to support each other in making a difference, and to have fun doing it. This role is perfect for anyone with a growth mindset and a passion for being part of something positive.

  • Collaborate with the engineering and product team to understand requirements, refine roadmaps and task definitions, and deliver solutions, while maintaining a high bar for quality in a fast-paced, iterative environment.

  • Work outside the core application stack as necessary, extending and supporting peripheral systems as needed to meet the needs of the product and our customers.

  • Advocate for, and implement, improvements to product quality, security, and performance.

Requirements

  • Min. 3 years experience as a software engineer, with significant experience in cloud-based web application development, with at least one of the major cloud providers (AWS, GCP or Azure).

  • You aren’t required to know any specific language - but we expect strong experience in one or more of the prominent languages, such as C#, TypeScript, Kotlin, Python.

  • An ability to design and implement clean, robust web application architectures, selecting appropriate technologies and design patterns and striking an appropriate balance between efficiency and reliability in development and operation, while meeting product goals.

  • Strong experience working with databases.

  • Understanding of security and authentication mechanisms.

  • Excellent communication and writing skills, with the ability to clearly document procedures, processes and work performed.

  • Excellent organisational skills - you’ll thrive in a startup environment and be comfortable juggling priorities and responding to change with grace and flexibility.

  • Enthusiasm for working collaboratively in a team and supporting others.

  • A ‘do anything’ attitude - we are small, and the problems and opportunities we face are big. You don’t let your role define you, and will pitch in anywhere needed.

  • Degree in computer science, engineering, or physical sciences.

Bonus points

  • Experience with IaC, e.g. CloudFormation, Terraform, Serverless

  • Experience working with spatial and remote sensing datasets at large scale, including scalable high reliability delivery.
